Cooper Lighting Introduces The First Zhaga Certified LED Recessed Luminaire
June 5, 2012

Cooper Lighting, an industry leader committed to delivering innovative products and driving transformational technology in the lighting industry, has announced the expansion of the IRiS™ Lighting System’s architectural product line to include the P3LED directional series, a 3-inch aperture LED recessed series, the first in the world to be a Zhaga certified luminaire.

Compliance to standards outlined in Zhaga Book 3 for spotlight LED engines enables a clear upgrade path for the LED array. These emerging industry standards also enable multi-vendor solutions providing future proofing while encouraging competition driving performance enhancements and cost out necessary to accelerate the adoption of LED.

Developed for demanding commercial and residential applications, the P3LED housing platform is based on the popular 3-inch aperture series combining the flexibility of interchangeable optics with energy savings, long life and the sustainability of LED. The P3LED is adaptable; distribution can be modified during construction or years later by changing out the optical elements (trims), which are available in downlight, accent, wall wash and lens solutions. The optical elements are offered in a wide selection of finishes and flange styles and can be installed flush to the finished ceiling surface using an optional flush mount adapter.

The housing platform is suitable for direct contact with insulation (IC rated), airtight per ASTM-E283 and damp location listed. The fixture is wet location listed and appropriate for use above spas, showers or in protected outdoor locations including eaves and soffits when used with lens optical elements. An optional CCEA-rated housing is available for Chicago plenum applications.

The P3LED directional series is currently available in 3000K CCT, 85 CRI typical (80 CRI minimum) and achieves 70 percent of initial lumens (L70B50) at 50,000 hours. Alternate color temperatures and 90 CRI options will be available later this year. Depending on beam angle and optical distribution the luminaire delivers over 1,000 lumens and can replace up to a 75W low voltage tungsten-halogen MR16 type lamp.

The innovative facetted borosilicate glass LED optic is available in 10-, 15-, 25- and 40-degree beams and features a highly reflective, multi-layer dielectric coating to maintain color accuracy and output over life. The LED optic’s keyed interface provides turn and lock installation for ease of focus. An integral glare shield accepts multiple theatrical filters and diffusers for virtually unlimited creative control and an optional media holder accepts one or two 2-inch glass lens or filters. The P3LED housing platform uses the same patented locking 365 degree rotation and 45 degree tilt to facilitate quick and accurate aiming and the degree markings assist in repeatable settings.

The P3LED intelligent microprocessor-based control gear (driver) automatically ‘reads’ the LED array type and adjusts output current, providing rated lumens while reducing system power when more efficient LED’s are utilized—effectively future proofing the luminaire. The series is dimmable to 10 percent and available in 120 or 277V input with phase cut, 0 – 10V or digital addressable lighting interfaces (DALI), adapting to a variety of control types. The P3LED with DALI option is now available with Cooper Controls’ Fifth Light advanced lighting management control system, enabling reduced power and energy use with photo sensors, providing daylight harvesting, dynamic on-off control using occupancy detection and user-based scheduling.

The IRiS P3LED has recently been honored and recommended for specification in the fourth annual Next Generation Luminaires™ (NGL) Solid-State Lighting Design Competition. The prestigious NGL competition recognizes and promotes excellence in the design of energy-efficient LED commercial lighting luminaires.
